Rescues work day and night coordinating the care and wellbeing of thousands of animals annually. We are eternally grateful to the numerous organizations that are dedicated to helping our canine companions. We put together a list of Los Angeles rescues that adopt to college students, but we are always looking to expand it! Want to add a rescue? Let us know here.
Instead of focusing on a specific breed of animal, we highly encourage you to focus on finding a rescue you love! Most rescued animals don't exactly come with a pedigree, but the breed of a dog truly doesn't matter. What matters is the genuine connection between you and your pet -- who cares if they're a mutt?
We encourage you to visit the websites of the rescues listed below. Understanding what animals are available, how their adoption process works, and what medical protocols they have in place for their animals are all essential to finding a rescue with a pet for you!
Just because a rescue isn't listed below does not make them unqualified or "bad." There are hundreds of animal rescues, and any dog would be lucky to find their forever home.
Please remember that rescues are typically overwhelmed with applications, especially rescues with large followings. Trust the process, and understand that a pet that looks ideal online may just not be the right fit for you if you do not receive a response.
Adoption fees typically cover medical costs, spay/neuter, and initial vaccines. Be as thorough as possible in your adoption application, and explain what makes you a stand-out home for a pet. Remember that pets are a 10-15 year commitment, and you should be prepared to explain how you plan to transition from college to adult-life with your pet by your side.
Good luck, and thank you for opening your heart and your home to a rescued animal!
